A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document that lets you appoint one or more people you trust to make decisions on your behalf if you ever lose the mental capacity to do so yourself. There are two types of LPAs:
Health and Welfare LPA: This allows your attorney to make decisions about your medical care, daily routine, and living arrangements.
Property and Financial Affairs LPA: This allows your attorney to manage your finances, pay your bills, and make decisions about your property.
Benefits of having an LPA:
- Peace of mind: Knowing that your affairs will be taken care of by someone you trust if you become unable to do so yourself.
- Choice and control: You get to choose who you want to act on your behalf and what decisions they can make.
- Avoids delays: Having an LPA in place can prevent delays and complications if you do lose capacity.
- Protects your loved ones: It can save your loved ones the stress and burden of having to apply to the Court of Protection to make decisions for you.
Who should consider getting an LPA:
Anyone over the age of 18 who wants to plan for the future should consider getting an LPA. It's especially important for those who:
- Have a family history of dementia or other cognitive impairments
- Have a chronic illness or disability
- Are concerned about what might happen if they become incapacitated
